Film &
Video Distribution 2.0
The meeting began with Stacey Parks of Film Specific discussing Distribution 2.0 possibilities:
Stacey is an expert in the area of Film & TV distribution, with over 15 years experience working with independent film producers. She wrote the book "The Insider's Guide To Independent Film Distribution," considered to be an essential handbook for independent filmmakers seeking production and distribution insight for their films. Simultaneously, she launched filmspecific.com, a website dedicated to educating filmmakers about independent film financing, distribution, & marketing. Stacey is also a frequent contributor to Digital Production Buzz.
Stacey covered all the traditional distribution revenue streams, such as theatrical, DVD and broadcast, but she also covered the new areas: cable video-on-demand and Internet VOD. She gave realistic revenue ranges for all of them. DVD is still usually the biggest moneymaker for independent films, and right now cable VOD is bigger than Internet VOD, but that is slowly changing.
Stacey also discussed one of the most likely forms of theatrical distribution for indie flix - service deals. Recommended service companies include Freestyle Releasing, Area 23, Argot Pictures and Variance.
Educational distributors such as Scholastic and Bullfrog were also covered. She highly recommends that any indie producer attend the upcoming American Film Market in L.A.
The Brothers Winn presented their True-Life Experience with Distribution 2.0:
After working together in various industries and capacities, The Brothers Winn (Jedd and Brett) decided to form a media company, Titan Arts, LLC. The brothers launched a podcast called the WhatYouOughtToKnow show in September of 2007. Jedd is the camera guy and editor. Brett runs the business and talks at the camera. Both brothers contribute to script writing and researching the show.
The Internet is the place where the little guy can self-distribute and make big money, right? But when you try to pin down anyone who says they make money in online media, more often than not they are evasive or vague. People say they are making money, but they don't want to talk about how much they make or how they made it. In this presentation, The Brothers Winn did what no other Internet distributor does - opened up their books and showed the lessons learned and the painful details of monetizing their almost 3-year-old podcast: what they tried, where they made money, and where they didn't. If you missed it, you missed some great information!
The meeting took place in the event auditorium at the brand new VisionPulse Creative Executive Office Suites (CEOs) in Sorrento Mesa. Conference rooms, event auditorium, and office suites for groups of 2 to 200 for as low as $8 per hour with no long term lease commitments. Full catering kitchen and creative services are available, and the event auditorium can be used as a video or photo studio."
Stacey's appearance was sponsored by Groovy Like a Movie and their new stock footage company, stockr3d.com.
Thanks to Stacey Parks, the Brothers Winn, and VisionPulse for some great raffle prizes!

Special
Effects and Animation in Television Production
This month’s
meeting was held at the La Jolla offices of
Shilo, an Emmy Award-winning creative production
company, representing a group of filmmakers led
by directors Jose Gomez and Andre Stringer. The
evening started with networking and great food
from La Salsa, with plenty to go around.
Rich Ford started
things off with an engrossing presentation on
what can be accomplished using only your NLE
system to create special effects and animation.
It’s surprising what can be done with a little
knowledge of the included features and filters.
Next, Dave Schweitzer took us through the
creation of exploding titles in After Effects
and Motion. With a little practice, impressive
sequences can be executed.
The evening
concluded with a fascinating presentation by Tom
Green of Shilo, who dissected the production
workflow of a national spot they did for Scion
automobiles, showing the development from rough
sketches all the way to a completed and nothing
short of incredible video sequence. Everyone
could feel the energy and creative juices
flowing from the crowd, with many in tha
audience anxious to try out some of what they
learned in their own productions.
Special thanks to our presenters - they helped
make this meeting possible:
Rich Ford

Music Scoring and Soundtracking with Larry
Groupé
to download a self extracting audio
recording of this meeting, provided by
James Alburger
About 40 of us, including a group of multi-media
students from Platt College, gathered in Studio
A at
KPBS to cover the topic of music for the
first time in years. We reviewed all the
options, from cheapest to best:
|
Buy-out libraries (istock,
StudioCutz, Music Bakery) |
|
Needledrop libraries (Network,
FirstCom, Killer Tracks) |
|
Software (Sound Forge, Garage Band) |
|
Composer libraries |
|
Soundtrack songs |

Custom scores |
The feeling of the group seemed to be that
usually we're stuck at the cheaper end of the
spectrum, which does the job, but rarely makes
our projects soar. Custom scores are what we
all aspire to.
The main part of the program consisted of board
member Craig Bentley (and the audience)
interviewing
Larry Groupé, one of the most talented and
versatile composers working in the entertainment
industry today.
Most notably, Larry
wrote the score for The Contender
starring Joan Allen, Gary Oldman and Jeff
Bridges, a highly regarded political drama that
received multiple Academy Award
nominations. Other feature film credits include
Resurrecting the Champ, starring Samuel
L. Jackson and Josh Hartnett, and Nothing But
the Truth, with Kate Beckinsale and Matt
Dillon. Larry's latest projects are a remake of
Straw Dogs, with James Marsden and Kate
Bosworth, and the Monopoly documentary, Under
the Boardwalk.
Larry showed many examples of what a score can
add to a scene, and discussed how to work with a
composer and a music supervisor. Among
many other topics, he outlined the process of
scoring a feature, how he works with producers
and directors, and the typical budget for a
feature score (1-3% of the total budget).
Before the program, about 20 people toured the
deluxe production facilities at KPBS.
Many thanks to the folks at KPBS for hosting so
gratiously, as well as donating several door
prizes. Other door prizes were donated by Larry
Groupé and Hibiscus Real Estate.
We also had our prize drawing for those who
completed our online planning survey. Winning
the $100 gift
certificate from
Video Gear was Brad Olander -
congrats, Brad!
